Mountain Fuel Triathlon TeamMountain Fuel took a five man team through to the inaugural Kielder Triathlon which was organised by High Terrain Events and sponsored by Mountain Fuel.
The stunning course was based on an Olympic distance Triathlon which consists of a 1500m open water swim in Kielder reservoir, a 25 mile bike ride through undulating forest roads and finishing with a testing 10k trail run around the peninsula.
Kielder Water swim legThe Mountain Fuel team consisted of Jonny Hume and David Ray who were competing in the individual race and a relay team made up of Steven Ray (swim leg), Paul Stafford (Bike) and Rupert Bonington (Trail Run).
Jonny was the overall winner on the day finishing in a total time of 02:21:25 with David finishing third on 02:23:34. Their race began with David leading on the bike and swim but David said,  “Jonny was flying and had a brilliant bike and run to get the win.”
The relay team came home first too in their category finishing in a total time of 02:21:33 and each member beat their estimated times for each leg so they were delighted with the win.
Bike TransitionRupert said, “As a relay team we had it easy compared to Jonny and David, they are both superbly fit and in great shape for their upcoming events. David who has only recently taken up Triathlons is in training for one of the toughest Iron Man competitions in Europe at Tenby in Wales. Also Jonny, is getting ready for the C2C Adventure Race which sets off from St Bees Head and finishes in the spectacular Robin Hoods bay. His adventure includes mountain biking, kayaking, open water swimming, running and navigating from one side of the country to another! It’s been an amazing year so far for the Keswick Mountain Fuelers and we’re looking forward to many more challenges in the year ahead.”
Kielder Triathlon Trail RunThe teams were trialing the new recipe for ‘On The Go Fuel‘ and found it to be a fantastic replacement for gels. Winning team member Jonny had a Morning Fuel for breakfast and then sipped a Blackcurrant Xtreme Energy drink en-route to the event as it was a two hour drive and registration was two hours before the off. Jonny then sipped a 750ml bottle of Xtreme Energy on the bike leg and had the ‘On The Go Fuel’ at the transition before the run.
